Open Records Law

Name: Georgia Open Records Act

Citation: O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 et seq.

Commentary:

Anyone can file a request. Initial response time is three days. There are no appeals. The Georgia Attorney General runs the nonbinding Open Government Mediation Program to resolve disputes, but only state residents can use it. Fees are for review/redaction and duplication (fees for search/retrieval are charged only if the request poses “an unusual administrative cost or burden”). Universities can waive fees. Georgia universities and colleges have been very responsive to our requests, with the notable exception of the University of Georgia, which operates in bad faith by charging extortionate fees that are ridiculously higher than any other university in the country.
